it had been a staple of roman occupation policy to utilize informers and spies, both the legions themselves, and later the frumentarii and civil officials of the empire had access to resources training and official backing in their actions.
they could be very persuasive using all the techniques of coercion and bribery that a resourceful empire could muster to monitor, control and stifle any challenges to their rule.

I guess Gerry Adams knows exactly how an espionage agency infiltrates an organisation by turning it's own members and coercing/inducing them to spy on their leaders, and all the psychological and emotional turmoil that goes with it as Sinn Fein was heavily breached by the British security services.
A very insightful observation, I never really believed that Judas just did it for the money, the Romans would have been masters at getting to his family, lovers, friends and and at finding his personal weaknesses because inducements are never enough on their own.
